Waitomo Caves is a highlight for many visitors to New Zealand, as well as for many local kiwis. If you have never seen limestone caves before, with stalactites and stalagmites, you are in for a treat.
Water dripping from the roof or flowing over the walls of the limestone caves leaves behind a deposit of limestone crystal which sets as hard as concrete. As time passes, these accumulate to form beautiful cave decorations. Visitors to the caves can walk through the underground caves, view amazing stalectites and stalegmites, and enjoy a boat ride gliding in the dark along an underground river, with the milky way of twinkling lights from thousands of glowworms shining above.
The more adventurous can go black water rafting in a tube through the river, or try out caving to see amazing rock formations close-up!
