Whale watching

One of the best places to see whales in New Zealand is Kaikoura (a small seaside village located on the north-eastern corner of the South Island). Just offshore from Kaikoura is the Kaikoura Canyon, a 2km deep canyon which attracts a huge array of marine and plant life to the area.

Whale Watch Kaikoura has one of the best whale watching operations. It operates all year round, and offers visitors a unique and exciting close up encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale, the largest of the toothed whales. They claim to have a 95% whale spotting success rate, and visitors often see other whale and dolphin species, as well as seals and albatross during the tours.
